MOLLY DIVES FROM AN ICEBERG. BUT HER STORY BEGINS WITH FEAR!
The jump to Newfoundland, the preparation with Will Gadd and a question that concerns us closely: to be brave you really have to stop being afraid?

The part that gets your eyes wide open is the jump. A woman, an iceberg, the icy water of Newfoundland. The part that deserves to stay comes first: everything you need to learn, control and decide to get up there. And the possibility, to keep until the last, to go back.
Molly Carlson made courage the thread of his sports life and his public story. Today, October 22, the Red Bull Iceberg Dive project draws attention to a business carried out in June 2026: a dip backwards from an iceberg off Newfoundland. Red Bull presents her as the first woman to dive into a free iceberg. But the most interesting story doesn't end in that record.
Before he dived, he had to learn how to climb.
The project combines two skills that do not coincide: how to fly to water and how to reach an ice platform. Red Bull's official communication talks about months of preparation, between cold water training and climbing with Will Gadd. The jump, according to the organizers, is about fifteen meters.
Gadd is a Canadian ice climbing expert, a discipline in which to know the environment counts as much as the athletic gesture. For Molly, however, the ascent represented a new terrain. Even a top-level athlete can find himself a beginner when the context changes. His talent in diving didn't make someone else's work superfluous.
It is a detail that makes the story more beautiful: at the center there is an individual enterprise, but around there is a team. Knowing how to do something amazingly well doesn't mean you already have to do everything.
The right to say: today we do not
An iceberg can split, collapse or roll without warning: Molly explains this in the project’s documentary. She worked with ice specialist Will Gadd to reach her diving spot. The jump takes your breath away; behind it are preparation and skills that a few seconds of video cannot capture.
This willingness to give up changes the reading of the jump. The preparation is not to be convinced that everything will be fine at any cost: it also serves to recognize when it is necessary to stop. The company of a professional, built with specialists, is not a challenge to reproduce on vacation.
Fear doesn't disappear as soon as you get good
“The scariest thing I’ve ever done”: that is how Molly describes the challenge in the project’s official account. And diving is her profession. Being very good at something does not make us immune to fear. Even for an experienced athlete, that ice was a new challenge.
The jump remains outstanding. The emotion that precedes it, however, makes it possible to recognize at least in a part of history. There is no need to compare a job interview with an ice wall to understand what it means to feel ready and frightened at the same time.
The risk, in motivational stories, is to turn any hesitation into a defect to be corrected. Here there is room for a more respectful reading: to take seriously with a goal means to know even your own uncertainties, without shame and without giving them every decision.
Who is Molly Carlson, even far from the iceberg
Canadian, born in 1998, Carlson is a protagonist of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series. His official record recalls his debut in the circuit in 2021 and his success in the final stage of 2026 in Polignano a Mare. A concrete bond with Italy, where its sport finds one of the most recognizable frames.
Next to the races he built Brave Gang, a community in which he invites people to share their stories of courage and support themselves. On its website the message also includes the relationship with the body and the kindness towards themselves. In 2025 he had talked about it with Adam Grant in the ReThinking podcast, also addressing the theme of asking for help.
What's left, when the water closes
We can keep the most spectacular image of this story. Or notice everything that makes that image possible: time, skills, trust, listening. None of these things are in a single moment, yet without them that instant would not exist.
Molly's diving. We still have a less extreme and closer question: what is the step worth preparing for, accepting that we are still a little bit afraid? The answer must not impress anyone. It must only belong to our lives.
