THIS PANETTONE IS NOT FOR EATING: IT HOLDS 24 BEAUTY SURPRISES!

Maybelline New York borrows the sweetness of Italian Christmas for Il Dolce Far Makeup: an Advent calendar and gift sets chosen with their recipient in mind.

If your first thought was panettone, you followed exactly the right clue. The shape recalls those familiar boxes that begin appearing on tables and beneath Christmas trees in December. Inside, however, the surprise goes another way: mascara, face products and little make-up companions. Nobody will have to argue about who gets the slice without candied fruit.

Il Dolce Far Makeup is Maybelline New York’s Christmas offering. Its nod to Italian festive cakes gives beauty a cheerful gift-ready air, easy to picture beside a handwritten card. The Advent calendar is the immediate eye-catcher, but the collection also includes sets in different sizes and combinations.

The panettone with little doors

The calendar contains 24 surprises, including make-up and accessories. The packaging takes its inspiration from the festive cake, with Christmas decorations and the collection’s name. Italian retailer dm lists it at €54: a useful reference for placing the gift, which is separate from the collection’s sets containing fewer products.

Part of a calendar’s pleasure is the gesture itself. Choose a place for it, put it down, open a door each day. For a cosmetics lover, it can become a little appointment with something to examine, try or put in the beauty bag. Given to someone you speak to often, it might even prompt a daily message: “Look what I found today.”

Not everyone enjoys surprises in the same way, naturally. Some love discovering new colours and textures; others only want the mascara they have used for years. Before choosing a calendar, it is worth thinking about which of those sounds like its recipient. That is another way of paying attention.

If you would prefer a smaller present

Il Dolce Far Makeup gift sets come in three lines. Single Product focuses on one item, including Cancella Età, Lifter Gel and Sky High. Core brings together two products and a pouch; Premium offers three products, also with a pouch. The fresh element is the combination and Christmas presentation of products already in the range.

Core pairings include Sky High and mini Tattoo Liner, or Lash Sensational Body with the same mini pencil. One Premium option combines Sky High, SuperStay Matte Ink in Pioneer and mini Tattoo Liner; the other includes Lash Sensational Body, Superlock Brow Glue and mini Tattoo Liner Gel Pencil.

For someone particularly interested in eye make-up, mascara and pencil may be more relevant than a box containing many different categories. For someone who enjoys changing their look, the calendar offers discovery instead. Both ideas belong in the same collection because we do not all want the same thing in front of the mirror.

A beauty gift begins with a little observation

Before choosing, think back to the last time you saw your friend, sister or mum getting ready. Was the mascara on the shelf? The pencil almost finished? The lipstick always the same shade? Some preferences are visible without turning gift-buying into an interrogation.

An ordinary conversation can offer a clue too. “I like your make-up” often starts a chat far more useful than ten perfect-gift lists. You may discover that she likes a certain effect on her lashes, prefers something easy to blend or dislikes tiny pouches. Concrete details help you choose well.

If you are buying for yourself, you can be just as honest. Does opening doors excite you, or are you mainly attracted to the box and Christmas atmosphere? There is no correct answer to guess. Knowing what appeals to you makes the purchase more enjoyable, whether it is the whole calendar or one product you really wanted.

The pouch has a life in January too

A set with a pouch can remain useful after the Christmas tree has gone back into its box. Keep morning products inside, organise small things in your bag or use it for a weekend beauty kit. If you already have a favourite case, there is no need to replace it: the new one can do a different job.

For a personal present, one addition requires no further purchase. A note with an invitation: coffee together before the holidays, an afternoon getting ready without rushing, that dinner you have postponed since September. The set remains a beauty gift, but it can also become the beginning of something shared.

When you wrap it, allow the shape some breathing room. A ribbon and a card may be enough, especially for the calendar that looks like panettone. The surprise starts as soon as the recipient tries to work out what they are about to open.

The real panettone can come afterwards. With candied fruit, without it, the one somebody always slices too early, before everyone has even sat down. In between, a little beauty door to open on the table and a conversation taking the scenic route. In December, we can save ourselves a few minutes like that.
