KEANU REEVES: KINDNESS IS HIS SUPERPOWER!
A new storm awaits him in the Netflix thriller Maelstrom. Away from the screen, Keanu has often chosen to stand close to other people’s storms: children with cancer, families needing support and research to sustain. We love his quiet way of being there.

Fifteen minutes to talk to Keanu Reeves. Ask him a question, listen to a story, find yourself on screen with one of the world’s best-loved actors. In June 2020, that encounter was the prize in a charity auction. On the other side of the fundraising were children with cancer and families who needed support.
If you wonder why we are so fond of Keanu, we can begin here. With the way he has chosen, on several occasions, to put his name and his time at someone else’s service. We know him from The Matrix, Speed and John Wick. These chapters of his story deserve just as much attention.
Today brings news of his next screen project. And at CHIARA! we want to share it alongside the gestures that make us say: Keanu, how lovely when popularity becomes a helping hand!
First, the news: Keanu enters the storm of Maelstrom
Keanu Reeves is attached to Maelstrom, a Netflix action thriller directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, the director of Carry-On. The 26 October announcement brings back a project based on a screenplay sold in 1993: a story that has waited a long time to find its way.
The story follows a federal agent protecting a woman threatened by her husband, a powerful criminal against whom she is due to testify. A hurricane makes their situation even more dangerous. On paper, it has all the ingredients to keep you glued to the sofa.
For now, this is a film in development: the sources consulted give no release date. In the meantime, the news offers a chance to look at the good Keanu has helped to support over the years.
Fifteen minutes with him, help for children
Let’s return to June 2020. The pandemic disrupts gatherings, initiatives and fundraising. Camp Rainbow Gold, an Idaho organisation supporting children diagnosed with cancer and their families, also has to change its plans.
Its main fundraising evening, the Share Your Heart Ball, is cancelled with only 48 hours’ notice. The organisation looks for another way and prepares an online auction. Keanu offers a private fifteen-minute video call: a conversation with him to support its activities.
The auction was scheduled for 15–22 June. The organisation’s announcement explained that the support would help it continue its programmes for families. It is a touching thought: an unforgettable encounter for a fan can become an opportunity for respite and companionship for a family.
The announcement also described who would benefit: camps for children diagnosed with cancer, activities for siblings, family retreats, scholarships and a teenage support group. These services were free, supported by donations and volunteers. Illness takes up so much space in a child’s life. Protecting room to play, meet friends and feel part of a group is a precious way to care for everyday life.
Lending his voice to research
Then there is Stand Up To Cancer. Its official archive documents Reeves among the faces involved in its 2008 campaign and among the participants in the fundraising broadcast on 7 September 2018.
Research needs resources, continuity and attention. A well-known person can help by bringing a wider audience closer to a project, encouraging people to stop, listen and contribute.
In these initiatives, Keanu’s name appears alongside those of other artists and the organisation’s work. It is a shared effort. That is lovely to remember: good grows when everyone contributes something, while researchers, staff, volunteers and families continue to play their part.
John Wick can help beyond the cinema too
Another gesture involves an object a fan would recognise immediately: a gi, the uniform used in martial arts, made for the cast and crew of John Wick: Chapter 4.
The Charitybuzz auction listing names Keanu Reeves as the donor and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as the beneficiary. The uniform bears the signatures of the actor, director Chad Stahelski and instructor Dave Camarillo. The lot, now closed, also included a bag, belt and card.
A film-related keepsake thus becomes a way to support a children’s hospital. The listing specifies that Reeves had not worn the uniform and that it was not used in the film. The gesture still matters: offering something that can turn fans’ affection into help for other children.
When a love of motorsport meets solidarity
Racing For Kids also lists Keanu among the participants in the Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in Long Beach, an event supporting the organisation and children’s hospitals.
The project uses the appeal of motor racing to draw attention and resources to young patients’ needs. Here a personal passion meets a practical opportunity to help. It is an idea we can take to heart: starting with what we know how to do, the people we know and the places where we spend our time.
Making room for good, quietly too
Time given to Camp Rainbow Gold, research initiatives, the John Wick charity auction lot and fundraising rides: different gestures, with people and projects to discover. The overall figures for his private giving remain private. These public initiatives already offer plenty of good stories to follow.
We can play that part too
Perhaps this is what makes him so dear to so many people. We can admire the actor and be inspired by a simple choice: noticing that something of our own can be useful to someone else.
We may not have his audience, but we have time, skills and opportunities. Helping a local organisation. Sharing a skill. Bringing a serious fundraiser to the attention of the right people. Being willing to return after the enthusiasm of the first day has passed.
For those who carry God in their hearts, these gestures speak a familiar language: attention, service and closeness. Part of Keanu’s appeal is the invitation we can take from his story. Step away from centre stage for a moment and ask: who can I make a little room for today?
Keanu, away from his action roles too
In this 2022 conversation on the official channel of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor answers the host’s questions. An archive encounter to get to know him better while we await further news about Maelstrom.
Support for research and young people can take different forms. On CHIARA! you can also read AIRC chocolates: on 7 November, kindness has a sweet heart! and MATILDE, YOUR NAME KEEPS OTHER DREAMS SAFE.
