Cycling through California from your living room? Zwift’s Wild Isles are here
Three virtual islands, ocean views and new routes to explore: indoor training gets a change of scenery. Here is what has arrived and how to decide whether it suits you.

It is raining outside. Daylight fades early, you have just put down your bag, and the thought of pedalling while staring at the same wall does not excite you. Then a road overlooking the ocean appears on screen. There is one island, another further ahead, and your little avatar keeps moving while you do the actual pedalling. The sea is digital. The movement is entirely yours.
That is the invitation behind the Wild Isles, Zwift’s new Watopia expansion, available from 26 October 2026. The update also raises a very ordinary question: when autumn arrives, how can we bring some variety to the time we choose to spend moving?
What are the Wild Isles, in plain language?
Watopia is a virtual environment in Zwift. The Wild Isles add three islands inspired by California’s coastline and Catalina Island, with approximately 17 kilometres of new, mostly flat roads. The landscape features ocean views and virtual wildlife, including bison and whales. Connecting the Mayan Jungle to Jarvis Island creates more options when choosing a ride.
Nine cycling routes and three running routes are included at launch. The official forum specifies game version 1.124.0 or later and announces three further routes for 2 November. The project was previewed in September: the news now is that the area has opened, rather than a distant promise.
A little escape that fits inside your home
Imagine the difference between starting while thinking only about the minutes until you finish and setting off with a question: what is around that bend? That curiosity is the experience’s storytelling hook. It will not make everyone love indoor cycling, but it gives existing riders a different setting, something to look at and a route to recognise.
You can approach a ride as an exploration without making every session an assessment. The virtual scenery can surround an appointment you have chosen for yourself. If games, numbers and screens distract or irritate you, listen to that too. Finding your own way to move includes deciding that an attractive experience does not suit you.
Before admiring the scenery, check what you already own
The most useful first question is not which machine to buy immediately. It is whether your equipment can communicate with the platform. An exercise bike with a display is not automatically compatible with every service. Before spending, find your exact model in the official information and check the required devices and the phone, tablet or computer you intend to use.
Consider where everything would go. You need to get on and off comfortably, see the screen without an awkward position and have adequate space. If you share your home, consider timing, noise and the room others need. These details are less spectacular than an ocean view, but they can separate an imagined purchase from a workable routine.
Before your virtual ride, check the subscription and compatible devices. For running, check how to connect your treadmill, too. Getting set up is the first step towards enjoying the route.
Your first outing can simply be a discovery
If you already use Zwift, you can get to know the area without immediately setting a demanding target. Look at the route’s estimated duration, choose something consistent with your preparation and leave room for exploration. A flat route describes the digital terrain; it does not determine the intensity of your session on its own.
The freedom to stop when you planned matters too. Continuing for a reward or one more section can be fun, but your day contains other things. You can save some curiosity for next time. The scenery will still be there: you do not have to see everything on your first ride.
Together, even when everyone is at home
If you enjoy company, one idea is to agree on a cycling time with a friend, checking the options available on the platform. Sometimes knowing that someone else has also made space for that moment changes its meaning. You do not need identical abilities or the same appetite for competition.
Clarify your expectations first: are you exploring today, following your own training programmes or joining an event? Saying it aloud can make room for enjoying the shared appointment instead of comparison. And if you prefer quiet and a solo ride, that is equally welcome.
A new feature you can enjoy without feeling left behind
If you already have the platform and equipment, the islands offer a change of route without a change of room. If you are starting from scratch, you can simply be curious. You do not have to buy everything to keep up with autumn.
You might love it, feel curious or remain unmoved. Either way, there is a lovely question to take beyond the screen: what could make the next movement break I choose for myself more enjoyable? Perhaps a virtual island. Perhaps a real street near home. Your answer can change, and you can give it time to emerge.
