All the colours of life. God at heart.

DO SOME GOOD!

HOMEWORK FEELS LIGHTER WHEN SOMEONE STAYS.

An exercise canceled three times, a repeated question, someone sitting next to you. After school can be a place where good takes time.

A pen leaning on a closed notebook.

The rubber has already left a hole in the paper. The result continues not to come back and the next one begins to say that so much is not capable. You could check it out a lot faster. Or stop and try to figure out where the reasoning got lost.

It's a possible scene, familiar to anyone who has accompanied someone in their homework. In educational volunteering, even an apparently normal afternoon can become an important meeting: someone finds time for a question, waits for an answer, remembers your name when you return.

If you want to do something concrete, an after-school parish can be a possibility to know. It requires attention, willingness to learn and an agreed commitment with the coordinator. It can open a relationship space that goes beyond the notebook, respecting the educational task of the service.

The proposal of Caritas Ambrosiana

On the page dedicated to post-school parishes, Caritas Ambrosiana presents a search for volunteers of any age and describes a path that includes candidacy, cognitive interview and at least one afternoon per week. The support covers both school knowledge and the study method.

These are the public indications consulted on 21 October 2026. The page is not enough to confirm that a neighbouring office has a place available today: before organizing you, use the channels indicated to check times, needs and mode of insertion. An agreed availability is more useful than a promise made quickly.

If you live outside the diocese of Milan, you can learn from the diocesan Caritas or an educational reality of your territory. There could be services with different names and organizations. Asking how they work allows you to understand if your skills and the time you have can meet a real need.

Before you say yes, look at your real calendar

The idea of help can ignite a beautiful enthusiasm. Then the work comes, the unexpected, the journeys. It's worth looking at them first, so your yes has a shape that you can support. You can ask how long a shift lasts and what continuity is required.

You can also ask how to start: if there is a support, what training moments are there, to whom to turn when an exercise or a situation puts in trouble. Entering a service means working with other people, not having to invent all the answers on your own.

The skills required depend on the role and age of the participants. Talk about it with those who coordinate instead of choosing in advance between the idea of being perfect and that of having nothing to offer. You can discover a suitable task, or understand that another form of volunteering corresponds to you more.

Staying by without doing the place

When a person struggles, the desire to help him can push you to speed up. You can get to the solution right away and, without realizing it, leave only the task of copying it to her. Stopping on the passage that doesn't return can ask for more patience than the final result.

You can try to ask how he planned to do, what he realized about the delivery, where he wants to start again. And when you don't know an answer, you can say it and look for the help provided by the service. Admitting a limit can make it easier to ask questions even to those in front of you.

This is a reflection on how to accompany, not a didactic methodology to be applied without comparison. Each after school has responsibility and directions to follow. The willingness of the volunteer finds a direction when he enters into that joint work.

Trust Needs Respect

It may happen that, between an exercise and a pause, personal stories emerge. They are not material to be brought back to the group of friends or to be transformed into a moving post. The rules of the service on confidentiality, images and contacts protect those who participate and even volunteers.

If there is serious concern, you can discuss this with the person responsible in accordance with the procedures laid down. You don't have to handle a delicate situation alone or promise secrets that would prevent you from activating the necessary protection. Knowing who to turn to is also part of the accompaniment.

Respect also concerns the way families are spoken. From a difficulty in the tasks you can not obtain a judgment on an entire house. You can focus on what the service entrusts you, keeping your eyes open on a story you only know in part.

For those who believe, charity also takes this time

The Statute of Caritas Italiana connects charity to the integral development of the person, justice and peace. From this perspective, educational attention can also be a concrete way of witnessing to the faith: to make time and capacity available, within a service that respects the freedom of those who receive it.

You can bring in prayer the names and meetings of the day without turning the help into a religious condition. Those who enter an after school must be able to find the service for which they came. The good is also expressed in the reliability with which you maintain that covenant.

If you are curious about this possibility, the first gesture is simple: read the proposal, write down the questions and inform you. Maybe that's where an appointment on the calendar will come from. An afternoon when someone will find, next to their notebook, a person willing to look with him.
