SANREMO: A TINY LIFE EMERGES FROM THE SHIFTING SAND

A storm uncovers eggs and baby turtles. A lifeguard raises the alarm: specialists arrive and one living hatchling reaches the sea.

On the beach after a storm, a lifeguard notices something in the disturbed sand: eggs and tiny sea turtles. It is the morning of 21 October in Sanremo. He immediately alerts the Coast Guard, which contacts the Delfini del Ponente association.

That report starts the biologists’ intervention, coordinated with the Gruppo Ligure Tartarughe.

One hatchling reaches the sea

The specialists find eight intact eggs, three open ones and another three with living embryos that have not completed hatching. There is also one dead hatchling and one living baby turtle.

The living hatchling is weighed, measured and accompanied to the sea.

The nest’s precise position remains unknown. Meanwhile, the experts choose a more sheltered spot in Imperia for the eggs and living embryos: more storms are forecast and they need protection.

Now there is a chance to safeguard

We do not yet know how many eggs will hatch. The move is intended to offer them a chance to complete their development.

This is the second recorded nesting case in Liguria in 2026, following the one in Andora in September.

One step in this story deserves attention: someone looked at the sand, recognised something unusual and called people trained to intervene. Care began there.

If you find a hatchling, the first help is a call

The experts recommend not touching or disturbing the animals. If you see hatchlings or tracks on an Italian beach, alert the Coast Guard on 1530 or call 112.

Sometimes protecting a life also means keeping your hands still, making space and letting people who know how to help do their work.
