BEAUTY TALK!

A NEW HAIRCUT, A SMILE, A FRESH START: BEAUTY COMES TO MEET YOU!

At Hub 126, free haircare joins support for women facing hardship. Appointments are organised by the centre’s staff.

“The hairdresser? Definitely not this month.” When money has to cover rent, food and bills, some wishes slip straight to the bottom of the list. A haircut can be one of them. So can half an hour sitting down while someone takes care of you. In Milan, there is now another door to turn to: the new Social Salon at Fondazione Progetto Arca’s Hub 126.

The news, shared on 28 October 2026, concerns the second Italian space in L’Oréal’s Beauty for a Better Life project. Located at Via Sammartini 126, near Central Station, it is intended for women experiencing vulnerability. Haircuts, colouring and styling are free, by appointment. There is no need to turn this story into a fairy tale: the practical service it adds to the city already makes it worth knowing about.

There can be room for self-care here too

Financial difficulty can bring an uncomfortable thought: “I shouldn’t even want that.” As though wishing to have your hair done were something you needed to justify. Yet each of us knows the value of small gestures that help us feel comfortable. A haircut we choose, an unhurried conversation, someone listening to how we would like to look in the mirror.

Sometimes a hair appointment offers a moment when someone focuses on you, asks what you like and helps you feel like yourself in the mirror. On a difficult day, that attention can matter.

How the new salon works

According to Progetto Arca, the service will operate twice a month. Appointments are managed by the centre’s staff, and the work is carried out by professionals also trained in supporting people from difficult circumstances. The new space’s announced goal is to offer 150 treatments over the next twelve months. That is the project’s target, rather than the number of appointments already completed.

For information, contact Fondazione Progetto Arca through its official channels. Before travelling to Via Sammartini, ask how access to the service is organised and who coordinates appointments. This is not an offer you book by making an online purchase, nor a salon guaranteeing walk-in access. It is part of a support centre whose staff organise requests and can explain the next step.

The Hub is a wider network of help

Hub 126 already includes a solidarity food market and a social wardrobe. The new activity therefore joins a place where people can also find support for everyday needs such as food and clothing. This matters: haircare is offered alongside other services, within an ongoing relationship with staff and volunteers, rather than being presented as a complete answer to someone’s difficulties.

If you are looking for support, prepare a few questions before contacting the foundation. Which service matches your needs? How do you access it? Is an appointment or an initial conversation required? Should you bring documents? Staff are the people who can answer. Asking for precise information can save an unnecessary journey and help you understand what you can do next.

An experience with an earlier home

The new space joins the Social Salon at the Enzo Jannacci reception centre, which opened in October 2025. For its first year, the project’s organisers report more than a thousand treatments, around seven hundred people reached and two thousand five hundred hygiene and personal-care products donated. These figures relate to Casa Jannacci, rather than the new service on Via Sammartini.

Those numbers describe an activity, but there is no single experience to imagine for everyone behind them. Someone may have wanted a change, someone else only a trim. Some people talk a lot at the hairdresser; others prefer silence. An attentive service leaves room for these differences too. Accepting help does not mean giving up your preferences or being expected to feel a particular way.

If you want to tell a friend

You can discreetly share the official page, perhaps with a simple message: “I saw this service and thought the information might be useful.” Avoid signing someone up without asking or posting details about their circumstances. The choice of how and when to seek support belongs to the person concerned. Offering information can be a caring gesture without taking that choice away.

And if you are the one who needs it, you do not have to find a perfect explanation before asking a question. You can begin by finding out more. Nobody should feel less deserving of attention because making ends meet is difficult. Your dignity already belongs to you: a service can recognise it, respect it and try to make one part of the day a little lighter.

This time, beauty means being there

We like telling stories about beauty made of time and skills offered to others. A professional asking “How would you like it?” and genuinely waiting for an answer. An organisation connecting a small gesture to a wider support network. These are practical possibilities to share with accurate information, without turning them into promises of miraculous changes in someone’s life.

Because a blow-dry can simply be a blow-dry, and that is enough. Or it can offer the pleasure of seeing yourself differently, even for one afternoon. Let the person sitting in that chair decide what it means to them. For now, Milan has one more place where that small wish can be heard, and where somebody has made time to listen.
