GOD, TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY.
Your phone lights up early. The first message arrived at midnight; another includes a photograph you hoped had disappeared forever. Someone calls while you are having breakfast. Somebody remembers the date without needing a reminder and, with very few words, makes you feel thought of.

Then comes the moment you look at the number. The age you are turning, the age you seemed to be only yesterday, the things you imagined you would have done by now. You might laugh. Something might sting. A birthday can hold emotions that do not all fit into photographs.
Perhaps today you want a big party. Perhaps you prefer a simple dinner, or you are going through a period when even answering birthday wishes takes energy. You can bring this day to God as it is, with the joy you feel and the people you wish were near.
A life known, including its ordinary days
In Psalm 139, someone addresses a God who knows them deeply, in life's ordinary movements and from their very beginnings. We can read this passage on a birthday, letting it help us recognise the value of an entire life.
There are achievements you are happy about and stretches of the journey you would change. Gratitude can include both: acknowledging good received does not oblige you to call everything that happened beautiful. A wound too can be named without finding a conclusion today.
What follows is an original CHIARA! prayer for personal devotion. Read it slowly, change words that do not sound like you or pause at a passage. It is neither a liturgical formula nor a quotation attributed to a saint.
The prayer
Lord Jesus, today is my birthday. I pause before you with the years I have lived and the person I am becoming.
Thank you for my life. For the good I can recognise, for what reached me quietly, for the days I now remember with a smile.
Thank you for those who loved me before I knew how to ask for love. For those who taught me something, for friendships that began quietly, for the people remembering my name today.
I also bring you those I miss. The voices I wish I could hear on the phone, the embraces I cannot receive, the distances that on a day like this seem to grow larger.
Protect the good we shared. Help me remember it tenderly and make room for the people who are here now.
I entrust to you what I still long for. The things I speak of enthusiastically and those I struggle to name because I am afraid to hope again.
Give me light to recognise a possible step. Patience for what takes time. Freedom to change direction when I understand that I must.
If I look at my age and feel behind, help me return to my actual life: to the people I can love, to the good I can receive, to the choices awaiting me today.
Forgive the wrong I have done. Give me courage to acknowledge it, to apologise, to repair what I can. Accompany me where I carry a wound too.
In this new year I would like to learn to listen better, to keep a promise, to say thank you without rushing, to ask honestly for help.
Bless those celebrating with me. Those thinking of me from afar. Those whose birthday is today and who have nobody to remember it.
If I have joy, help me share it. If I am tired, teach me to rest. If I must choose, give me wise people with whom to seek a way.
I entrust the time ahead to you. The mornings I do not know, the encounters I cannot imagine, my desire to live and love.
Stay with me, Lord, as I begin another year. Amen.
After the birthday wishes, a gesture that feels like you
You can keep one of the wishes you received, the one that made you smile without asking anything. Reading it later can be a simple way of remembering closeness. A day passes; a few kind words can continue to accompany you.
Choose something you genuinely enjoy. A walk, someone to see, a cake you like even if it is not the most photogenic. You need not justify wanting to celebrate or organise a packed day to prove you are happy.
If this birthday is difficult, ask for a specific presence. A call, a short visit, somebody to eat with. You can say you would rather avoid surprises. Helping others understand what you want gives them a practical opportunity to be near.
When the day ends, perhaps one sentence will remain to cherish. It need not be an enormous promise for the next twelve months. It can be the name of someone you want to thank or a small thing you want to do more carefully. This too welcomes a new year: recognising the life held in your hands today.
