MARCELLO, THE LITTLE DONKEY WHO WON OVER AN ENTIRE VILLAGE!
He comes from the mountains of Valsesia, loves carrots, and someone has complained about his braying. But in Gargallo, in the province of Novara, the village has rallied to help him stay.

His name is Marcello, he is about to turn four, and he comes from Scopello, in Valsesia. When he could no longer stay in his old stable, Mattia, Chiara and Uncle Orlando decided to adopt him and bring him to Gargallo, near Borgomanero. Here, he found a large meadow by the woods, beside the little church of San Michele. And, above all, a whole village ready to love him.
Mascot and watchman
His meadow borders a local business, and Marcello soon became its mascot — and, as people jokingly say, its “watchman” too. Children, families and curious visitors often stop to stroke him or bring him something to nibble.
Everyone now knows his tastes: he adores carrots and fennel, while apples are allowed in moderation. Between one little mischief and another, this donkey from Valsesia has become part of the family.
The problem? His braying!
Someone, however, complained about his braying, and there was talk in the village of moving him away. At present there is no official order, but that was enough to spark a wave of support.
Social media filled with affectionate messages, including from people who live just steps from his meadow and say that Marcello keeps them company. For many, his braying is part of country life, just like a rooster’s crow.
A petition just for him
An online petition, “Marcello must stay in Gargallo!”, was even launched and gathered hundreds of signatures within days. Among the most widely shared messages is one written as if Marcello himself were speaking: a little donkey asking only to stay in his new home.
A gathering of supporters is scheduled for Sunday 11 October 2026, from 2 pm, in his meadow near San Michele. It promises an afternoon together, with a chance to sign the petition, chat and even hear a song written especially for him.
From Valsesia to the Novara area, Marcello has won over two communities. And he has turned a simple bray into a story that can bring an entire village together.
