Mama Flo, the good is served: the grandmother who cooks even for those who cannot pay
In Stockport, Florence Coke made its Caribbean restaurant a place of help. Between free meals, children supported during the holidays and a family lesson, its history comes among those awarded to the Pride of Britain 2026.

A restaurant may be where you go when you're hungry. Or the one where someone realizes you're hungry even if, that day, you can't afford to order. In Stockport, in Manchester, the name of Florence Coke is linked to this second possibility. The neighborhood is Mama Flo.
Its history has a very simple starting point: to know how to cook and choose to put that ability at the disposal of others. The Pride of Britain is one of the winners of 2026 in the category This Morning Local Hero . But the recognition comes after the gestures: first there were people to feed, lunches to prepare and a door to knock.
Who is Florence Coke, for all Mama Flo
The award card presents Florence as a 71 year old grandmother who runs a Caribbean cooking business in Stockport. His club, Mama Flos, is located on Buxton Road and has been open since 2013. Among the dishes told by the organizers are chicken jerk and goat curry: a cuisine linked to its Jamaican roots.
In a testimony published by the Black History project in Stockport, she herself is the first to present herself as an entrepreneur. He tells the pleasure of helping the community and supporting fundraising for schools and hospitals. It also quotes a quiet passion, reading. These are details that return an entire person, with a job and own interests, in addition to the title of local heroine.
When holidays make it harder to put together lunch
The organizers remember the free meals offered during the pandemic, the children's lunches during the summer holidays and the support of the elderly during the Christmas period. It is a help passed through different moments, when the everyday life of many families has become more complicated.
Here lies one of the strongest aspects of its history: the ability to recognize a need within ordinary life. For a child, the holidays are waiting, play and freedom; for a family in difficulty can become even weeks to be organized with reduced resources. A lunch offered intervenes precisely in that concrete part of the day.
The official account also explains that Flo began to invite some boys in the neighborhood to eat after realizing their difficulties. Instead of stopping at a distance, he tried to talk to them. It is an important passage because it shows the relationship that accompanies food: to know someone, to listen to him, to treat him as a person worth spending time on.
The generosity learned by watching Mom and Dad
To explain this habit, Florence returns to her childhood in Jamaica. In the testimony collected by the Pride of Britain, he says that the parents, farmers, prepared dishes for the people of the community. Sharing was a gesture seen at home, even before becoming his adult choice.
It is a form of education that leaves an image: adults work and, when they have to offer, make room for others. The kids are watching. Years later, that memory can return to a distant kitchen, with different ingredients and new people in front of the counter.
In the archive of the prize, Flo also describes the support received by the community while continuing to offer meals. His invitation to others is to share what they can. A help that starts from a personal activity thus becomes an opportunity for participation: those who receive and those who support are part of the same district.
The word "grandmother" doesn't tell everything
Mama Flo is a loving nickname. Yet its history deserves to be read also through work: keep a business open, prepare food, meet customers, recognize needs. The cure goes from very practical skills, built over time.
This makes his example near. Availability for others can grow within what we already know how to do. For her it is the kitchen; for another person it could be a competence, a free hour, a service organized together with someone. The useful question is what contribution we can offer with continuity, respecting our possibilities and the dignity of those who receive it.
Poverty remains a real struggle, even when a story moves us. A meal offered can lighten a day and create confidence; economic difficulties also require collective responses. Florence's value lies in the gestures she makes and in the people she manages to achieve, without having to ask her to solve everything.
The prize makes visible a work already begun
In the official list of Pride of Britain 2026, the recognition to Florence bears the name of a local heroine. The definition is understood by looking at the scale of his action: an activity, a road, people returning. The good is also measured in the possibility of relying on someone.
For those who read from afar, the most precious part can be this: to realize the social value of the places we frequent. A kitchen, a shop, an association can become meeting points when those who live them pay attention to people, as well as to requests.
Florence puts the food she knows how to prepare on the plate. In his story, that dish also becomes a way of saying: your difficulty concerns me. And it is a phrase that, when it finds a gesture capable of supporting it, makes itself understood in any language.
