DOES YOUR CAT FOLLOW YOU EVERYWHERE? THERE IS MORE THAN ONE CLUE!

Kitchen, desk, bathroom door. Before calling it pure affection, look at what is happening around you.

A cat resting in the sunshine

You enter the kitchen: your cat arrives. Sit down: there it is. Close the bathroom door: protests. This feline shadowing can have many reasons. Cats Protection lists companionship, attention, hunger, boredom and curiosity.

When does the following start?

If kitchen trips end in snacks, your cat may have learned the route leads to food. If it follows you when you return home, it may simply want company. Note three episodes: what happened first, what the cat did and how you responded.

“At seven in the evening, it followed me and stopped beside the bowl” tells more than “It never leaves me alone.” The same cat can seek different things at different times.

The irresistible closed door

Bathrooms contain smells and surfaces to explore; curiosity may explain the interest. Keep medicines, cleaning products and small objects safe.

Read the whole body

Ears, posture, tail and eyes belong together. Relaxed and rigid bodies suggest different situations. Slow blinking, for example, is associated with relaxation but is no “love meter”.

Offer a still hand to sniff. If the cat turns away, stiffens or leaves, give it space: it should choose when to receive affection.

Do we really understand them?

A study published in March 2026 asked almost two thousand volunteers to identify relaxed, tense or frightened cats in short silent videos. They were correct slightly more than half the time. This invites closer observation rather than grading us.

Play and quiet moments can help. For sudden behavioural change, consult a vet. Note appetite, activity and when changes began. A short video helps explain without replacing an examination.
