MOVE AT YOUR PACE!

Working out without jumping: fitness turns the volume down!

If every training video seems to require a jump, a burpee and a very patient neighbor, we have good news: the movement also has other forms. Low impact is a thread to know, as long as it doesn't become yet another miraculous label.

There are days when you want an energetic lesson and others when you just want to find a pleasant way to move. In the meantime, a curious message passes on social media: if you don't end up destroyed, you have done little. Let's stop the video. Spectacular fatigue is not a unit of measurement of the quality of a workout.

Low impact: what does it really mean?

In the language of fitness, the term generally describes activities that limit jumps and repeated impacts. In many standing sequences you keep at least one foot on the ground; other proposals take place in water, by bike or on the mat. However, it is not a health certification and it does not identify a single protocol.

Two lessons with the same name can have very different rhythms and requests. A choreography without jumps, a mobility session and a circuit with controlled exercises can all be sold as low impact. Before booking, you need to understand what happens during those minutes.

The fact that it tells the interest

ClassPass’s 2025 report shows low-impact bookings on its platform more than doubling compared with 2024. Those figures concern its users, but the appeal is easy to understand: a workout without jumps may interest anyone who would rather skip living-room burpees.

Low impact and low intensity are not synonymous

The first term mainly concerns the type of solicitation linked to the gesture; the second concerns what you are working on. Cycling without bumps does not prevent you from struggling. On the contrary, a quiet movement can remain light even if you do it standing. The label alone doesn't tell you what your effort will be.

To guide you in aerobic activity, the NHS offers a simple indication: at moderate intensity you can still speak, but not sing; at vigorous intensity it is difficult to say more than a few words without stopping to breathe. It is a general reference, not a personal prescription or even a diagnosis.

What activities can you meet?

• Walk: from the quiet exit to the sustained pass, with difficulties that change according to rhythm and path.

• Water gymnastics: to be chosen according to the level and characteristics of the course.

• Bicycles or bikes: resistance and durability greatly modify the commitment.

• Pilates and work on control: without assuming that every exercise is simple or suitable for anyone.

• Dance without jumps and mobility: different proposals that can please those looking for rhythm or slower movements.

It is a range of possibilities, not a list of automatically equivalent activities. The useful criterion is to ask what you want to train and what proposal you can follow with continuity. A course you love twenty minutes from home can be more workable than the perfect one on paper but impossible to reach.

How to read a video before pressing play

See if level, equipment and durability are indicated. Check whether the teacher explains variants and supports, or changes from one position to another by letting you chase the screen. A title "gentle" is not enough if the sequence requires balance or support that you have not yet learned.

If you train in the house, clear the space, make sure that the mat doesn't slide and keep away objects that can get in the way. Avoid improvising unstable equipment. If the video requires a variant you don't know, you can stop and look for an introductory layer: Finishing the playlist is not an obligation.

The noise of the feet on the floor does not award points. You can train carefully even without shaking the chandelier.

Who can it be interesting for?

For those who prefer to avoid jumps, for those who want to alternate different proposals and for those who are looking for a first more manageable experience. This does not mean that it is automatically indicated in the presence of pain or pathologies. In that case the starting point is your specific need, to discuss with a health professional, not the commercial name of the course.

The same is true when you pick up after a long break: choose an introductory proposal and gradually increase your commitment. The NHS page on adult guidelines invites you to talk to your doctor if you have been inactive for a long time or you have health conditions or doubts.

A good course is recognized by the answers

"Can I avoid being on the ground?" "Are there any alternatives to the supports on my hands?" "Do I need to know the choreography already?" Precise questions help to determine whether the proposal is suitable. A serious teacher should describe the work and its limits, not liquidate everything with \ it's easy, they all do it  .

Even the atmosphere counts. You can prefer high music, essential indications and a lively group; or a more collectible room. Neither of the two choices makes you more or less sporty. The important thing is to be able to follow and ask questions without feeling judged.

Three doubts to be resolved

Low impact means just stretching?

No. The expression may refer to many activities, including aerobic proposals. Read the course description.

If I don't sweat a lot, am I wasting my time?

Sweat alone doesn't tell you if the session meets your goals. Evaluate the work with those who follow you, rather than using the wet shirt as a report card.

Can it replace any other training?

It depends on the content: mobility, aerobic work and strength are not the same thing. The programme must be evaluated as a whole.

The most interesting question is not how much you can punish yourself. It's what movement you want to find next week. The low impact can be a response: choose the concrete one, over the label.
