A CANARY’S PERFECT HOME? MEASURE SPACE, NOT DECORATIONS!

Flying space, perches, clean air and habits to observe. A suitable home begins with the bird rather than the cage’s colour.

An Atlantic canary in Terceira, Azores

The cage looks lovely. But can your canary move comfortably once bowls and perches are in place? Before choosing a colour, look at the space left for your bird. An avian vet can help you choose the right environment.

Accessories must not take every inch

Food and water should be clean and easily reached. Observe perch use and regularly check bowls and the cage floor. Height does not compensate for missing width.

Before room flight, close doors and windows, switch off fans, remove other animals and protect dangerous surfaces. Keep the cage away from draughts, radiators and direct sunlight without shelter.

Two birds? Each needs a place

Species, temperament and space matter. Check both can feed and perch without being chased. If repeated aggression occurs, separate them safely and seek expert advice.

Small changes matter

Birds’ signs of illness can be subtle: appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings may change. Prolonged fluffed feathers, unusual sleep, laboured breathing or balance problems justify a vet visit without diagnosing the cause yourself.

Keep an avian vet’s number handy and share it with carers while you are away. No DIY medicines or remedies!

Pause to observe before cleaning. Precise notes about unusual behaviour help the vet understand your concern.
