MOVE AT YOUR PACE!

Shall we go for a walk? Fitness heads outdoors!

When do we see each other?Soon the commitments are set. And the chat stays there for weeks. A walk can be an easier appointment to organize: comfortable shoes, a well chosen ride and the pleasure of going out together. With some attention, because even simple things deserve care.

The proposal does not require a new sporting identity. You don't have to wake up at 5:00, buy a watch or decide that you're only going to hang out with people who say hiking. You can start from a park, a person you like to see and a time compatible with real life.

What do the data on clubs and on the way tell?

In the Year in Sport 2025 of Strava, the path is the second most registered activity on the platform. In the same report, the new clubs were almost quadrupled in 2025; those of hiking and racing are among the growing ranks. They are data of the Strava community and its investigation, not the measure of all walks in the world.

You do not need another report to ask a friend: “Shall we walk around the park on Wednesday?” Choose somewhere you know, agree on how long and perhaps have coffee afterwards. Often the hardest part is turning “we should meet up” into an actual date.

Walk, fast walk and trekking: choose the right proposal

A quiet walk in the city, a sustained exit and a path with a difference in altitude require different preparation and organization. The word "camminata" is not enough to describe the difficulty. If the group only publishes a wonderful picture of the panorama, the information you need is still missing.

Ask for distance, difference in altitude, type of bottom, expected duration and possibility to stop or re-enter. For a first meeting a well-known path can be practical, with clear references and without technical traits. A city tour doesn't become a waiver just because it doesn't end up at a summit.

How to find a group without relying on the first poster

You can look for proposals from sports associations, walking groups, territorial realities and municipal initiatives, always verifying who organizes and when the activity takes place. For the mountain, look for accompaniment and skills adapted to the itinerary. It's not enough for someone to know a beautiful place.

Check whether registration, insurance, odds or booking are required and who to contact for clarification. A welcoming group describes the level in a concrete way. It is suitable for all if no ground and commitment are explained.

The rule of the beautiful group: the rhythm agrees first. No one should find out halfway through that it has become a problem to wait for.

Walking to chat or to train?

You can do both, but it's better to say what the spirit of the exit will be. If one person wants to stop at every bench and the other has in mind a sustained step, there is no culprit: there are two different programs. Better to find a clear compromise or organize separate opportunities.

The NHS recalls that a quick step walk can contribute to weekly aerobic activity. To recognize a moderate intensity suggests the reference of speaking without being able to sing. Even a short exit can have space in the day; if you are not active, distance and commitment should be increased gradually.

The concrete kit, without shopping required

For a simple urban route parts from comfortable and already tried shoes. The NHS recommends shoes that support well and do not cause blisters. For longer exits additional attention is needed to weather, water and clothing; for challenging terrains the equipment must be chosen according to the route.

In autumn it considers the hours of light, the possibility of rain and the slippery traits. A ring near home with simple return can be a better first choice than a distant journey that you only know from the photographs. If the weather gets worse, changing the schedule is a practical decision, not a defeat.

The phone can help. Then you can also leave it in your pocket

Maps and organizational messages are useful. However, the walk should not become a continuous demonstration of how well you are using Saturday. Ask before publishing other people's photos; avoid publicly sharing sensitive data about someone's regular movements and meeting points.

If you enjoy recording the route, go ahead. If you prefer keeping your phone in your pocket, the walk still counts. The best part may be a conversation you have not had time for in weeks.

How to make it a possible habit

Propose something definite: day, place, approximate duration. "We must walk more" is an intention; "Wednesday after work we go around the park?" is already organized. It also leaves a simple way out: an invitation can be warm without becoming an obligation.

Alternate, if you want, you can go out with the company and go out alone. You don't need to cancel the walk because a friend has an unexpected, or turn constancy into an absence count. The NHS includes walking with friends among the possibilities to make the movement part of the routine.

Frequently asked questions

Should I get to 10.000 steps?

It is not a threshold to be imposed on every exit. Organize a path proportionate to the person and for the purpose of the appointment, without following a number at all costs.

Is a walking group always free?

No: verification of quotas and conditions of the individual initiative. Do not confuse an informal walk with an organized activity.

If I don't keep my rhythm?

Ask first which level is expected. A more suitable alternative can make the experience much more enjoyable.

The next "we have to see each other" can have a simple answer: "Let's take a walk?" Without promising heroic miles. With the very concrete desire to be there.
