PRAYERS

GOD, STOP MY THUMB BEFORE I PRESS SEND.

You have written it all, including the sentence you know will hurt. Added a full stop, deleted an emoji, read it again. Part of you thinks they will finally understand. Another part knows you will immediately start checking whether they have read it.

Anger can point to something real: an insult, a broken promise, a crossed boundary. We need not automatically feel ashamed of it. But a message can become the place where we unload everything, including things unrelated to its recipient.

Pause before choosing the words

The Letter of James invites us to be quick to listen and slow to speak and become angry. Beside an open chat, this becomes strikingly practical: leave space between what you feel and what you choose to give someone else.

That space does not weaken your point. It helps distinguish a fact from an interpretation, a question from an accusation and a boundary from a threat. You can say that you need time to explain yourself more clearly.

The following is an original CHIARA! prayer for personal devotion. It is neither a liturgical formula nor a text attributed to a saint.

The prayer

Lord Jesus, you see this message before I send it. You also see what I have not written: the disappointment, the tiredness, the longing to be understood.

Stay here while I hurry to reply. Help me recognise what has hurt me without turning my wound into a weapon against someone.

Let me read my chosen words again. If a sentence only humiliates, give me the freedom to delete it. If something must be said, give me courage to say it clearly.

Help me keep this message from carrying every unresolved argument, every fear I bring with me, every answer I wished to hear.

Teach me to ask for explanations when I do not know the whole story. And to protect myself when I already know a situation is hurting me.

Do not let me call peace a silence imposed by fear. Accompany me when I need help, when I must end a conversation or set a necessary boundary.

Care for the person who will read this too. I do not know everything they are living. Help us, whenever possible, find words honest enough to open a way forward.

And if today is not the moment, give me patience to wait. My worth does not depend on having the last word in this chat. Amen.

After amen, the message is still there

Read it again and ask what you actually want. To clarify an incident? Ask for a behaviour to stop? Explain that you are unavailable? A precise request helps more than a long list of faults.

In his 2023 message for social communications, Francis connects truth with charity. Speaking from the heart requires listening and respect; it does not mean diluting an uncomfortable truth or always pleasing others.

Some conversations deserve a call, others a written record. There is no perfect format for everything. If you receive threats or harassment, this prayer does not ask you to continue the conversation. You can keep the messages and seek appropriate support.

Perhaps you will send something shorter. Perhaps you will send nothing. What matters is being able to choose, instead of letting anger decide which words carry your name.
