GIOVANNI SCIFONI: WHEN LAUGHTER MAKES ROOM FOR QUESTIONS.
Some conversations about faith seem to demand a different voice before you begin: serious, composed, with the right words. Then someone tells you about a stumble, makes you laugh and, as you laugh, you realise the question involves you too.

Giovanni Scifoni brings his actor’s voice to stories about the saints: funny, distinctive and full of questions. His public appearances offer a way into faith through everyday life.
A smile that keeps the conversation open
Introducing Soul’s episode of 12 May 2019, TV2000 describes comedy that encourages thought and an interest in faith’s questions. The programme lets us hear his voice directly in conversation with Monica Mondo.
A voice that knows irony, awkwardness and contradictions can make talking about God feel familiar. Perhaps we laugh because we have lived that scene—or asked that question—ourselves.
A subject’s seriousness is not measured solely by tone. A smile may make an awkward question speakable and allow recognition without an immediate examination. It can bring important content closer.
A question from a difficult time
On 27 April 2020, during the pandemic, Scifoni spoke publicly about creativity and the search for meaning. He described his social-media work and how recognising everyday experiences can bring people closer.
Those words come from the pandemic, when daily life had taken a different rhythm. They leave a question we can ask today, too: what can we make with the time we have?
You need not be an actor to ask it. A meal, a conversation or a story shared with someone can be made thoughtfully, without waiting for perfect days.
Laugh together without targeting vulnerability
A joke can give everyone room to breathe, or leave one person alone while the others laugh. Look at the faces around you: whom are we including when we choose how to joke?
Faith groups can ask who pays for their fun: who is always imitated, who cannot answer back and whose vulnerability becomes a convenient target.
Laughing at our pretensions, small vanities and familiar habits can encourage honesty. Comedy must not excuse avoiding responsibility. If words hurt, we can acknowledge it instead of dismissing them as ‘just a joke’.
Questions leave room for faith
A Christian story can leave a question open instead of always supplying a ready answer. What do I desire? Why is trust difficult? What holds me together when my carefully built image cracks?
Catholic faith has content, tradition and community; it is more than a generally positive feeling. It can therefore meet real questions deserving study, prayer and conversation. Believing and trying to understand can belong together.
As you watch Soul, make room for the question that comes while you smile. Perhaps it is one you have been putting off, hidden behind trying to seem good enough.
