LIFE IN YOUR POCKET

Beauty is free on 1 November: see you at the museum?

The 1 November Domenica al Museo has ended. This selection from Lombardy, Lazio, Piedmont, Tuscany and Calabria remains as an archive of that edition’s opening times and access arrangements.

The free museum Sunday on 1 November 2026 has ended. This guide keeps the openings and activities announced for that day. For your next visit, check the museum’s current calendar.

You do not need to recognise every painter or remember every dynasty. Curiosity is enough. We have selected confirmed openings in Lombardy, Lazio, Piedmont, Tuscany and Calabria, with the practical differences that matter before you leave.

Free entry: check exactly what is included

This initiative concerns participating state cultural sites. It does not make every museum in Italy free, and guided tours, workshops and additional services may have separate charges. A free ticket can still require a reservation.

Open the museum’s own announcement for 1 November and check admission procedures, last entry and availability. If generic opening hours conflict with a special announcement, contact the venue. Ask about accessibility and facilities before travelling if these affect your visit. A quick call can save a wasted journey.

Lombardy: a day in Vigevano

The National Archaeological Museum of Lomellina, in Vigevano, announces free opening from 9am to 5pm on Sunday 1 November. It is an option for a quieter day rather than an exhausting race between attractions.

Build your visit around a simple question: which object tells you most about somebody who lived before us? With children, this can become an observation game. Adults can enjoy the same permission to look slowly. The museum lists 0381 72940 and drm-lom.archeovigevano@cultura.gov.it for enquiries. See the official November programme for updates and other activities.

Rome: modern art, with a reservation

At the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, Viale delle Belle Arti 131, admission on 1 November is free, but online booking is compulsory for everyone, subject to availability.

Arrange this before telling your friend to meet you at the entrance. Follow the instructions in the Gallery’s official notice. Inside, allow yourself to spend time with an artwork before deciding what it means. You can start with the feeling it gives you.

Rome with children: the workshop has separate charges

The Museum of Civilizations, at Piazza Guglielmo Marconi 14, announces free admission to the Palazzo delle Scienze and Palazzo delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari throughout the day.

At 4 pm, the museum also lists a family activity on the prehistoric collections, with a pop-up workshop. This activity is paid and requires booking; the recommended age is 7–12. The listed fees are €8 for ages 4–12, €6 for a second child, €3 for ages 13–17 and free for ages 0–3. The stated booking deadline was 1 pm on Friday 30 October and has passed. Do not rely on joining the workshop without confirmation; the published contact for any reopened places or cancellations is didatticamuciv@abintra.it. Free entry to the collections is a separate offer. Read the Ministry notice.

Piedmont: choose a residence, abbey or castle

The regional museum authority confirms several free openings. Villa della Regina, in Turin, opens 9.30am–6pm, last admission 5pm. Vezzolano Abbey opens 10am–5pm, last admission 4.30pm.

At Racconigi Castle, the building opens 9am–7pm, last admission 6pm; the park opens 9.30am–5pm, with last admission at 3.45pm. These are separate schedules. If a walk in the park is your priority, do not plan around the castle’s closing time. Consult the official Piedmont list for access arrangements.

Florence and Calabria: two more ideas

In Florence, the Accademia Gallery, Bargello, Medici Chapels and Palazzo Davanzati announce free opening. Reservations will not be available for this day, according to the Ministry’s notice. Check each venue’s opening times and allow for queues.

At Capo Colonna, Crotone, the museum opens 9am–7.30pm, last admission 7pm, while the archaeological park opens 9am–5.30pm, last admission 5pm. The day is free here too: see the official programme.

One museum is enough

Choose one venue, plan the journey and leave room for waiting. Free entry need not become a competition to see everything. One room, a detail you notice together and a conversation on the way home can make the day.

Check return transport, weather for outdoor sites and any bag or pushchair restrictions. Information was reconfirmed against official announcements available on 1 November 2026. Check the venue’s opening time and admission arrangements before travelling.
