CLOTHES DON’T MAKE THE SAINT

VERSACE DREAMS BIG AGAIN: A DATE WITH COUTURE!

Pieter Mulier prepares his Versace couture debut. Discover the work of an atelier and revisit the house’s official 2016 runway show.

First a shoulder appears. Then a drape, a movement of fabric, a silhouette crossing the runway that stays in your mind long after the video ends. Couture can make us pause over a dress as though it deserves a longer look. Now there is news to awaken that curiosity again: Atelier Versace is preparing to return to the couture week runway in Paris.

The return is planned for January 2027 with Pieter Mulier’s first couture collection for Versace. Atelier Versace’s last dedicated runway show was in July 2016. After that wait, we are curious to see the clothes; the precise day and venue are still to be announced.

The new name behind this chapter

The house’s official profile introduces Mulier as Chief Creative Officer and traces his work at Jil Sander, Dior, Calvin Klein and Alaïa. His appointment at Versace was announced in February 2026. That background helps explain the interest in his debut, but it cannot tell us the shapes the clothes will take. The collection itself will provide the answer when it is presented.

We can be curious without filling the wait with predictions presented as facts. How will he relate to the house’s design codes? What will feel familiar, and what will surprise us? These are interesting questions precisely because they remain open. Watching a new show also means allowing its creators’ work to reach us before deciding in advance what we expect it to mean.

Behind the dream are the hands that make it

A photograph of a finished couture look tells only part of its story. There is also construction: imagining a shape, testing how fabric falls, refining volume and finishing. A Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode feature about Dior’s ateliers shows the importance of structure, adjustments and movement. It is an example of craftsmanship, rather than an account of Versace’s future workshop.

Watch a runway show and choose one dress. What holds its shape? Where is the volume? How does the fabric move as the model walks? Those details can fascinate even when the dress is far from your own wardrobe.

Why the runway return is news

A runway lets us see clothes one after another: a returning colour, a changing shoulder, a skirt in motion. That is what we are waiting for from Atelier Versace. A red carpet shows one look; a runway can reveal a whole world.

It offers the chance to move from individual appearances to a collection seen as a whole. When designs appear together, we can connect them: notice a repeated shape, a changing colour, a detail linking different garments. This is one possible way to look, rather than a test you must pass. Even without knowing a brand’s history, you can begin with what you see.

A visit to 2016, knowing where we are

The official Atelier Versace Women’s Fall 2016 video provides an archive reference while we wait. Published by the Versace channel in July 2016, it belongs to that season under Donatella Versace. It is not a preview of Mulier’s work and should not be mistaken for the forthcoming 2027 show. The year is part of the story, not a detail to overlook.

Watch it once without stopping. Then choose one outfit and revisit its appearance. Observe the relationship between body and fabric, how an edge moves, where there is stiffness or softness. You do not have to decide whether you would wear everything. The pleasure can simply be understanding work that we usually glimpse for only a few seconds in a photograph or a short clip.

An idea to bring into your wardrobe

A couture dress can offer inspiration without requiring you to find a copy. A colour pairing might become a shirt with trousers you already own. A soft line could make you try a different belt or rearrange a scarf. These are everyday experiments, on a completely different scale and budget, and they can still be a satisfying response to something you have enjoyed seeing.

Start with one element. Changing colour, volume and accessories at once can make it harder to know what you actually like about the result. Look in the mirror, move around, sit down. Your clothes need to fit your own life. A runway idea can be beautiful even when your interpretation is much simpler and more comfortable than the original look you watched.

January, with curiosity switched on

Spring/Summer 2027 Haute Couture Week is scheduled for 25–28 January. We are waiting for the house to announce Atelier Versace’s precise day and venue. Meanwhile, revisit the archive: a detail missed years ago can still catch your eye.

For now, we can enjoy the anticipation and the story that came before it. Fashion can invite us to notice shapes, hands and ideas. You do not need to own an atelier dress to be interested. Sometimes the dream stays on screen while you take away something small: a colour to try, a new question, a wish to look more closely the next time fabric moves.
